Instagram DM limits, in plain language.

Two limits matter first. Meta’s messaging window, and the plan cap inside DripDM.

3 minute read

The 24-hour window

After someone sends an eligible inbound message, the standard window allows replies for a limited time. A comment permits one private reply, but only the recipient’s response opens the ordinary 24-hour messaging window.

DripDM keeps scheduled sends inside that window. If the window has closed, the send is held.

Private replies

Plan on one private reply for each comment. Put the link in that message. A second private reply to the same comment is not the normal path.

Your DripDM cap

The free plan includes 1,000 DMs a month, 100 contacts, and 10 leads. Paid plans have unlimited DMs, unlimited contacts, and unlimited leads!

Separate permission, capacity, and your subscription

A monthly allowance answers how much DripDM includes. It does not answer whether a particular person can receive a particular message. Before increasing volume, identify the entry point: an inbound DM, an eligible story event, or a comment that permits a private reply. The private reply is a separate permission, not the start of unrestricted conversation. The recipient must respond before ordinary follow-up messages can use the standard 24-hour window. A larger plan cannot change that distinction.

A workflow to try

Imagine a downloadable checklist promoted with the keyword CHECKLIST. Put the promised resource and a clear explanation into the first private reply. If someone replies with a question, answer while their messaging window is open. If they only open the resource, do not assume that a link tap grants permission for another DM. Review the inbox before adding a Pro reminder. A message that is held because the window closed should remain held, even when the monthly DM balance has plenty of room.

Checks before you change the setup

When a campaign slows down, compare failures across recipients rather than assuming one daily limit. A disconnected account, a closed conversation, and a Meta rate limit require different remedies. Free also limits contacts and captured leads separately from its 1,000 monthly DMs. Paid plans have no DripDM cap on those three quantities, but Meta still controls API availability and recipient eligibility. Do not interpret unlimited product usage as unlimited delivery or a promise that every comment becomes a conversation.

How to keep a record of each campaign

Keep this record yourself. A spreadsheet or a short document is enough. DripDM does not save it. Give each rule its own row. Write the connected account, the event that starts the rule, the opening message, whether the person must reply before the next message, and the plan feature that rule uses. Put your monthly DripDM allowance in one column. Put Meta’s permission result in another column. Upgrade when the allowance is used up, or when the rule needs a plan feature you do not have. Keep the same plan when Meta refuses the send. Open the record again when the offer changes, or when you add a second messaging app. A useful row states why the message was eligible and what Meta accepted. Add the number of people in the campaign as its own figure.

Questions

No. The official API does not open a cold thread. They comment, reply to a story, or message you first.
