Guide

Engagement rate is not the same as DM taps.

A common formula is (likes + comments) ÷ posts ÷ followers. Use it as a planning number. Count link taps in DripDM when the goal is the DM.

Formula

Add likes and comments on the posts in your sample. Divide by the number of posts. Divide by followers. Multiply by 100.

Instagram does not publish one official “good” rate. Compare a post with your own last ten posts.

Choose a sample that matches the question

This guide uses a follower-based rate from likes and comments. Other reports may use reach, impressions, saves, or shares, so numbers with the same label are not necessarily comparable. Write down the denominator, the included actions, and the sampling period. If you total ten posts, enter ten posts in the calculator rather than treating the combined likes as one post. Keep sponsored content, giveaways, and ordinary editorial content identifiable because they can attract different behavior.

A workflow to try

For a comment-keyword campaign, compare similar posts with similar time to accumulate engagement. Record the keyword request alongside likes and comments, then inspect the private handoff separately. A post can look strong by follower-based engagement yet produce few useful conversations. It can also produce modest public engagement and valuable inbound questions. Use DripDM link taps and captured leads to examine the requested action instead of expecting one public percentage to describe the whole funnel.

Checks before you change the setup

Do not diagnose a weak offer from one unusually high or low post. Check whether a giveaway inflated comments, whether repeated keyword comments are part of the sample, and whether follower count changed substantially. A follower-based rate is a descriptive ratio, not proof that Instagram will distribute the next post more widely. This calculator does not fetch account data or certify audience quality; accuracy begins with a consistent sample you supply.

Write a metric definition next to the chart

A reporting note can specify the sampled posts, observation time, included likes and comments, follower snapshot, and whether keyword requests remain in the comment total. Include exclusions such as a giveaway separately instead of quietly removing inconvenient posts. That definition makes a later comparison meaningful when a teammate rebuilds the report. If your goal is a resource handoff, add a separate row for taps or captured leads rather than modifying the public formula after seeing the result. An engagement chart is most useful when its methodology stays stable and the campaign question remains visible beside it.
