Guide

They have to contact you first.

DripDM cannot open a new Instagram thread with a person who never messaged you, commented, or replied to a story.

What counts as contact

A DM from them counts. A story reply or reaction counts. A comment can receive one private reply.

A follow, a like, or a profile visit does not open a thread.

Turn a public invitation into a requested reply

The question is not whether a person appears in your audience. It is whether an eligible event gives the business a messaging path. Someone may follow you for months without sending a DM. That relationship does not create a cold-outreach permission in DripDM. Comment-to-DM is different: the person comments on your content, and an eligible comment can receive one private reply. That initial reply still does not authorize a general sequence unless the recipient responds.

A workflow to try

Replace a plan to DM every follower with a post that offers a useful resource. Say which keyword to comment, what the private message contains, and whether you will ask for an email. For an existing follower who prefers not to comment publicly, offer an inbound DM keyword instead. Both choices let the person take the initiating action. The business can then fulfill the request with a saved message rather than guessing that everyone who liked the post wants a promotion.

Checks before you change the setup

If a first reply does not arrive, check message requests, the account connection, rule scope, and the actual failure reason. Do not work around recipient settings by trying another account or importing a scraped list. A follow gate operates within a flow the person already entered; it does not find non-followers and send unsolicited messages. Keep your resource available through another public route when someone cannot receive the private reply.

Public calls to action that preserve choice

A caption can say what the resource contains and invite a keyword, while a bio can offer a message link for people who prefer to ask privately. Neither needs to imply that all followers will be contacted. Avoid language such as we will DM everyone who sees this, because visibility is not an inbound event. Make the non-message route useful too: a public page can carry service hours or support information without forcing a person into a private conversation. The objective is to make contact easy and requested, not to find a clever way to imitate the audience list used in an email campaign.

Questions

The gate runs after they comment or otherwise start the flow. It does not search your follower list.
