Lead capture from a comment
The comment starts the DM. The DM asks for the email. The reply with an email becomes a lead.

Do this
Keep the change small enough to test from a second account the same day.
- Say why you want the email in the same message.
- Set Watch on the comment rule. Next post or Reel starts only after the rule is on.
- The free plan stores 10 leads.
- Business can add the lead to Google Sheets.
The first message must explain the exchange
A public comment can start a lead-capture journey, but the commenter should understand what information is requested and why. Do not advertise an immediate free download and then surprise the person with unrelated qualification questions. Decide whether an email is required to deliver the requested item or whether the item can be sent first. Separate that fulfillment purpose from consent to newsletters, promotions, or a callback. A stored address is not a universal permission record.
A workflow to try
Write the caption and first private ask as one consistent offer. The message can identify the resource, explain why an email is needed, and invite the person to reply with it. Their response provides the ordinary conversation entry needed for later replies. Test using an email you control and inspect the saved lead, not just the chat. If Business Sheets is part of the workflow, verify the row in the intended restricted sheet before sending production leads there.
Checks before you change the setup
Free has a 10-lead allowance that can be reached independently of the monthly DM or contact limits. If capture stops, distinguish the product cap from a failed keyword or unrecognized reply. Handle malformed or missing information clearly and do not repeatedly pressure someone who declines. Exports and external sheet copies require their own privacy and deletion process. A comment-led private reply alone does not justify a later automated sequence when the person never responds.
Follow one test lead beyond the inbox
After the test address is captured, confirm who receives it and how the requested item or callback is fulfilled. If a sheet is involved, verify the intended row and access; if an email system is involved later, follow its relevant subscription process. Remove test records through the appropriate process when no longer needed and remember external copies are separate. The lead journey is incomplete if information is stored but nobody owns the next action. A good review asks whether the person understood the exchange and received what was promised, not merely whether a string resembling an email appeared on a contact.
Questions

Only when both are needed for a disclosed purpose. More fields are not automatically better leads. Ask for the minimum information needed, test how it is stored, and keep any later marketing permission separate from simply fulfilling the person’s Instagram request.
No. Capture and later marketing permission are different events. Explain the use of the address and follow the appropriate subscription process in the external email system. Keep the requested resource exchange clear.
